HINO has released a hybrid truck said to provide improved performance and efficiency while lowering emissions.

The 714 Hybrid meets Euro V emission targets. According to the company, it uses a lighter synchronous permanent-magnet electric motor as opposed to the induction-type electric motor used in the previous Hybrid model.

The new electric motor delivers 36kW maximum power and 350Nm maximum torque at 1000rpm. The previous model produced up to 23kW of power and 243Nm of torque.

Other features include a main battery with 30kW and inverter power of 64kVA, which is more than double that of the superseded models.

An ECO lamp is located on the dashboard. This illuminates when the hybrid system is assisting the diesel engine. To increase fuel-efficient operation, drivers are encouraged to change their driving style to keep the lamp on as much as possible.

Another lamp indicates energy recovery via regenerative braking. The longer the lamp is illuminated during deceleration, the greater the energy recovered and stored for later use.

An optional idle-stop mechanism allows the diesel engine to use the electric motor as the starter motor. This allows the vehicle to shut down the diesel engine when the vehicle is stopped, and smoothly restart the engine when it is time to move. The electric motor cranks the diesel engine at 400rpm to start it, in order to save fuel.
