New regulations governing the sale of organic products came into force in Canada on 30 June 2009.
The regulations aim to facilitate international market access, provide protection to consumers against deceptive and misleading practices through a uniform approach to organic product certification and labelling, and support the further development of the domestic market.
The regulations will apply to all products, domestic or international, that wish to make any organic claim.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency will be responsible for implementing and enforcing the regulations.
Australian and New Zealand organic manufacturers are advised to make themselves aware of the new regulations.
