$20m expansion for Warrnambool abattoir

Midfield Meats has announced a $20 million expansion which will create more than 200 jobs and include the construction of a cold store and upgrades to the rendering plant.

According to weeklytimesnow, the Warrnambool abattoir, which is receiving $1.5 million from the Victorian government for the expansion, processes more than two million beef and small stock annually.

Premier Denis Napthine said “The project will see a new $15 million cold store built in Scott St beside the Meat Barn. Current refrigeration facilities will also receive a $2 million upgrade in the project.”

$3 million will spent on allowing the rendering plant to treat its waste water and dispose of it through a trade waste connection, including the construction of a trade waste sewer, installation of new equipment to separate waste streams and treat nutrients, construction of anaerobic tanks to treat waste water and capture biogas, as well as a new effluent storage plant, Napthine said.

“The construction of the cold store will ensure products are stored locally on site and transported by rail, direct to the port in Melbourne for export providing quicker turnaround for the growing Asian and Middle East markets,” he said.
