Ahrens breathe life into signature Barossan build

Striking new facility in Tanunda provides home for eight SA winemakers and local produce.

The Barossa Valley is testament to Ahrens’ expertise and experience in providing cutting-edge, and aesthetically stunning, design and construction solutions for the leading food and wine region.

Ahrens’ latest project for Artisans of Barossa was no exception, providing a new home in Tanunda for eight South Australian winemakers to display and sell their wines; Lienert Vineyards, John Duval Wines, Spinifex Wines, Hobbs of Barossa Ranges, Sons of Eden, Purple Hands Wines, Schwarz Wine Co., and Chaffey Bros Wine Co.

Founded in 2005 by a group of small-scale Barossa winemakers to display and sell their wine, Artisans of Barossa aims to connect the wine drinker with the opportunity to explore the extraordinary breadth of possibility that the Barossa region is known for.

Using a complete range of in-house capabilities and their own structural steel, the team provided a striking new cellar door, restaurant and provedore, terrace dining area, commercial kitchen, private dining and meeting rooms, for the valued client.

A stand-out element of the build is a feature ironstone wall that was hand built from local stone by experienced masons, and symbolises the building’s connection to the Barossa’s ancient landscape. With their finger on the pulse when it comes to sustainability, the timber and iron used in the build was preserved and given new life.

These works have provided a space for wine enthusiasts to enjoy Barossa wine any way they choose; from hosted tastings to simply enjoying a glass on the lawns. With the facility now officially open, visitors are able to taste and purchase the finest in local produce, with 40 wines available for tasting every day.

Ahrens helped bring the client’s idea to life, and Artisans of Barossa Chief Operating Officer Howard Duncan was more than satisfied with the result.

“I cannot sing the praises of the team high enough… throughout the process, from costing to completion, we had confidence Ahrens was in our corner and working hard to get the absolute best result for our business,” said Duncan.

“Ahrens’ attention to detail, commitment to high levels of engagement with the client, responsiveness in communication, and overall level of professionalism was beyond good – it was brilliant; the team made the process of building our new home an absolute delight.”

Adding to a portfolio of work for leading wine brands including Hentley Farm, Treasury Wine Estates and Vinpac, this completion was a success and Ahrens was proud to be involved in such a trailblazing project for the region.
