Aldi takes on the big players

Supermarket chain Aldi is trying to make inroads into the duopoly currently dominated by Woolies and Coles with the launch its first Australian television advertising campaign on prime time TV tonight.

Aldi says the commercials on all three free to air networks have become viable now that the chain has 200 stores along Australia’s east coast.

Since the first Aldi store opened in Australia in 2001, the company has avoided TV advertising, favouring catalogues and print advertising, in order to keep costs down.

Aldi has been operating internationally for over 50 years.
