AQIS to assess beef imports

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) has advised that all importers of beef, beef meat products and relevant products containing ingredients of bovine origin, will be inspected from 1 October 2010.

The inspections, a part of the AQIS Imported Food Program, will include the verification of the country of origin of all beef products and products of bovine origin. AQIS inspectors will be assessing Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) certifications in accordance with the Imported Food Notice 04/07.

Importers will be notified of inspections by a Food Control Certificate issued by AQIS. The Food Control Certificate will also specify if samples of products are required to be taken for analytical testing.
