Aquaculture company set to expand in Tasmania

A Tasmanian aquaculture company has used a $135,000 government grant to expand its business and create jobs.

Shellfish Culture Tasmania is using a $135,000 grant from the Tasmanian Government Innovation and Investment Fund to help install new grading and hatchery equipment.

The project is part of the company’s $3 million expansion of an oyster spat at Clifton Beach, and satellite operations at Bicheno.

The upgrade will boost pacific oyster production by allowing the company to use spawnless oyster spat. It is said the innovation will boost investor confidence as a more reliable source of spat stock is available improving quality, mortality and seasonal risks.

Minister for Economic Development, David O’Byrne said the grants boosted economic investment in the state by helping businesses to innovate.

"These strategic grants help regional Tasmanian businesses innovate, adapt to changing markets, and create new jobs," O'Byrne said.

"We support Tasmanian businesses by getting directly involved and offering practical growth strategies".
"Shellfish Culture Tasmania investing almost $3 million to expand is also a major vote of confidence in Tasmania's diverse economic future," he said.

The Tasmanian Government Innovation and Investment Fund was launched in 2010 in response to factory closures in the region and aims to provide families and communities with sustainable jobs and economic stability.

It is expected to create 122 new jobs and generate $6 million of investment.
