The European packaging giant said that a boom in global dairy sales is expected, which will be a consequence of an expanding population and the rising purchasing power of the urban middleclass prosperity.

Currently Western Europe has the highest per capita milk sales and while consumption here is set to fall, in other regions, particularly China and India, a massive increase in sales is expected.

In 2010 the global demand for milk and other liquid diary products stood at 270 billion litres. By 2020, that figure is expected to rise to 350 billion litres.

At the moment over half of the milk consumed in developing countries was sold as loose milk. However, Tetra Pak says that sales of packaged milk is increasing and predicts that by 2020 70 percent of milk will be sold in packages.
