Aussie oils praised on world stage

Australian olive oil producer Cobram Estate has come through as one of the most successful exhibitors at the inaugural 2013 New York International Olive Oil Competition.

Cobram Estate’s 2013 Extra Virgin olive oils received a total of two Best-in-Class trophies and four Gold Medals from its four entries, including winning the Best-in-Class in the “Medium Single Varietal” category and also in the “Robust Single Varietal” category, for the limited release Ultra-Premium Hojiblanca and Picual.

Cobram Estate Premiere and Cobram Estate Classic were also awarded gold medals.

Being held for the first time,  the New York International Olive Oil Competition had an international panel of leading experts to identify and honour the very best Extra Virgin olive oils in the world.

Cobram Estate joined several other Australian olive oil producers to compete against  more than 700 other entries including some of the best from Italy, Spain and California.

Cobram Estate’s founder Rob McGavin said that after several "challenging seasons", in 2013 the company's groves in northern Victoria had  an idea season to produce its olives.

"In 2013 our groves in northern Victoria enjoyed perfect sunny days and cool nights during the growing season that enabled the ideal development of our olives," he said.

“Winning four gold medals, including two Best in Class, out of four entries in such a competitive event is exciting proof of the outstanding quality and freshness of our oils.”

Other Aussies grabbing medals included Rylstone Australian Olive Oil which grabbed a Best in Class in the Robust Blend category as well as two golds, Alto Olives with a silver, and Camilo Enterprises with a silver.

Australian Olives Association chief executive officer Lisa Rowntree said the competition emphasised the quality of oil being produced in Australia.

“Australian Extra Virgin olive oils are now regarded as some of the world’s best,”  Rowntree said.

“The Australian olive industry prides itself on producing fresh, high quality, authentic Extra Virgin olive oils. This is another great reason for Australian shoppers to look for fresh Australian Extra Virgin olive when they next shop for olive oil."
