Aussie wines praised at Australia Day Tasting in UK

Over 700 trade and media guests attended Wine Australia’s annual Australia Day tasting in London last week where a vast selection of the Nation’s versatile wine portfolio was showcased.

Considered one of the most important events for Australian wine in the UK calendar, almost 1,000 wines from 32 regions across Australia were tasted, showcasing both boutique labels and major brands.

Key European trade personalities including Wine Gang member and publisher of wine-pages.com, Tom Cannavan, said that the high quality demonstrated by the Nation’s wineries marked a ‘new era’ for Australian wine.

“I bumped into loads of people who feel the same kind of energy about this event – it’s almost as if Australia is reawakening and it’s a brand new thing that’s coming into UK,” said Cannavan .

“Everyone’s excited and trying new things, trying new styles of wine, and there’s a real kind of energy about it.”

The event showcased 184 brands with over 20 winemarkers and principals flying over to London specifically for the event including Jacob’s Creek Senior Winemaker Nick Bruer, Ten Minutes by Tractor Owner and Winemaker Martin Spedding and Elderton Co-Managing Director Cameron Ashmead.

Yvonne May, Wine Australia Director for UK/Ireland/Europe said the tasting was the most comprehensive for the category in the UK.

“The reach of the event goes beyond the UK, with major buyers travelling to the tasting from across Europe and we are delighted to welcome guests from Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Ireland,” said May.

“The event highlights the diversity, both regionally and varietally, of a wine portfolio that continues to excite key players around the world.”
