Australian sandwich makers gain industry voice

Australian sandwich industries are set for greater industry representation with the launch of a specific industry representative body – the Australasian Sandwich Association.

Established to focus on industry issues and liaise with government and other regulatory bodies, the Australasian Sandwich Association is set to offer greater representation to sandwich-makers and to benefit the café and sandwich industry as a whole.

The Australasian Sandwich Association aims to promote and celebrate the sandwich sector and industry throughout Australia in the short-term and regionally throughout the Asia-Pacific region over the coming years.

‘For too long café owners and sandwich shop workers have had to battle to have their voice heard in the crowded Australian food industry,’ said Graeme McCormack, Executive Director of the Australasian Sandwich Association. ‘Now, with the Australasian Sandwich Association coming on board as a new membership based industry organisation,  services and resources aimed at bringing the café and sandwich sectors together will help give representation to the sector.’

In 2011, the ASA will be drawing industry attention towards Australia’s café and sandwich shop workers through a dedicated competition aimed at finding Australia’s best sandwich creator through the Great Australian Sandwichship.

The Great Australian Sandwichship is Australia’s only foodservice competition of its kind:  it is only open to non-qualified chef entrants, meaning the true lunch-time heroes – café workers, canteen personnel and sandwich makers – will compete directly to see who can create the best sandwich.

The Great Australian Sandwichship Southern Final will be held from June 19 – 21 at the FSA Expo in Melbourne. The winner of the Great Australian Sandwichship Southern Final will have direct access to the World Sandwichship Final in Sydney in October, where they will compete against the best sandwich makers from around the world.
