Bacteria detected in mouthwash: product recall

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has issued an urgent recall of thousands of bottles of Colgate-Palmolive mouthwash after traces of a harmful bacteria were found.

The 300ml bottles of Savacol Antiseptic Mouth & Throat rinse were found to contain the bacteria, which is unlikely to affect healthy people, but could cause those with lung problems including cystic fibrosis to develop a chest infection.

"This recall is being conducted because some samples of the product have been found to contain bacterial contamination," the TGA said in a statement.

"As a precaution, you should stop using this product."

The TGA said contaminated bottles could be identified by a change in colour, taste or smell, or the presence of white flecks.

"All bottles should be returned to Colgate-Palmolive no matter how the product appears," the TGA said.

"If you have any concerns about your health after using this product you should contact your health practitioner."

No other Savacol or Colgate products have been affected, Colgate-Palmolive said.

It said consumers who had bought the antiseptic mouth and throat rinse should contact its customer service line on 1800 636 551 or email consumers _ aunz@colpal.com to arrange the return of an affected product and a full refund.

The mouthwash, is made by Gaba International AG Active, Switzerland, and is being recalled in 11 of the 12 countries it is distributed throughout Europe and Australasia.
