Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the United States, followed by spirits and wine, a new survey has revealed.
According to research by Consumer Edge Insight, 39 per cent of US adults say beer is their favourite drink, followed by spirits at 31 per cent and wine at 25 per cent.
Cider was the least popular beverage, coming in at only one per cent, CNBC reports.
The study suggests beer makers could be set for a turnaround next year, after experiencing weak demand for the last couple of years.
But while beer was the overall winner, results varied among different demographics, and spirits were more popular than beer among 21 to 27-year-olds.
Wine was also the most popular drink among women, with 36 per cent preferring wine and 33 per cent preferring spirits.
“While beer is still the most-consumed and is the favourite alcoholic beverage of the most people, there are reasons for brewers to worry,” David Decker, president at Consumer Edge Insight said.
“The sizeable gender gap in preferences is not new, but is a key issue that needs to be addressed.”
“And the bad news is that young adults aged 21 to 27 years old are more likely to prefer spirits to beer.”
