Bruny Island Cheese Co. has announced that its Raw Milk Tom has won a Super Gold Medal and the Trophy for Best Australian Cheese at the highly regarded World Cheese Awards held in Portugal.
This prestigious global recognition solidifies both Bruny Island Cheese Co. and it’s Raw Milk Tom as a standout in the world of artisanal cheese and marks a momentous achievement for the team at Bruny Island Cheese Co., and comes in the same week that the company celebrated its 21st anniversary.
This is the second year in a row that Bruny Island Cheese has taken out both a Super Gold and a Trophy at the World Cheese Awards after its Raw Milk C2 was recognised last year in Norway.
The World Cheese Awards, the largest and most respected cheese competition globally, attracts entries from hundreds of artisans across the world each year.
Judged by an international panel of experts, the awards celebrate quality, craftsmanship, and innovation, making the Super Gold Medal and national Trophy exceptional honours for Bruny Island Cheese Co.
A truly global cheese event, World Cheese brings together cheesemakers, retailers, buyers and food writers from around the globe to judge cheese from over 40 countries.
Taking place annually, the World Cheese Awards is hosted by different nations.
This year it was hosted by Portugal in the central town of Viseu where 4,786 cheeses from around the world were assessed by a panel 240 judges to identify 104 Super Golds, which were re-judged by an international Super Jury to find the Top 14 cheeses in the world which each received a Trophy in their respective categories.
This unique recognition highlights Bruny Island Cheese Co.’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship in artisanal cheese production.
Raw Milk Tom, a true expression of its pristine Tasmanian environment, is crafted from raw, unpasteurised milk sourced from the company’s own small dairy farm in Glen Huon and aged naturally for approximately 4 months, developing a depth of flavour that’s earthy, nutty, and distinctively Tasmanian.
In addition to the Super Gold and Trophy awarded to their Raw Milk Tom, Bruny Island Cheese Co. also gained a Gold Medal for their 1972 washed-rind and a Bronze Medal for their Raw Milk C2.
“Winning both the Super Gold Medal and the Best Australian Cheese Trophy is a testament to the commitment of our whole team and the excellence of our agriculture here in southern Tasmania,” said Nick Haddow, founder of Bruny Island Cheese Co.
“This award celebrates our passion for traditional cheesemaking methods, and our dedication to creating cheeses that reflect the unique terroir of our Huon Valley farm and herd of rare breed cows. We are honoured and inspired to share a taste of Tasmania with the world.”
“Making artisan cheese on a small island, staying passionate and true to the standards that we set ourselves, constantly pushing the case for raw milk cheese in Australia… it is not a path that many sane people would choose! But all that hard work feels worth it when we receive global recognition like this.”
