CAPS PCM dryers deliver potential energy cost savings up to 99 per cent

The CDRP Series refrigerated air dryer from CAPS represents a breakthrough in dryer technology and the new benchmark for energy efficiency. Recently trialled in Australia, the high performance unit uses patent-pending Phase Change Material (PCM) to achieve superior energy savings, with CAPS claiming a potential return on investment of one to two years.

CDRP technology harnesses the latent heat produced when PCM material converts solid to liquid or liquid to solid, automatically triggering the refrigeration compressor to switch ON or OFF according to varying compressed air heat loads.

Food and beverage companies can use CDRP dryers for a broad range of flows without compromising initial costs or energy consumption. The use of the PCM allows for more regulated temperature and fewer cycles compared to non-cycling dryers, thereby delivering greater energy savings.

CDRP dryers comprise a compact 4-in-1 module; storage, re-heater, chiller and separator. The dryers feature an integral stainless steel brazed plate heat exchanger offering high efficiency performance and stable dew point with anti-corrosive stainless steel material. Each dryer is helium leak tested and has an integrated controller with clear liquid crystal display for easy monitoring and operation. The PCM itself is an eco-friendly refrigerant that melts and solidifies above 0°C and does not require the use of glycol, pump, tank or hot gas bypass.

CAPS Product Manager for Gas and Special Projects, William Chan, explains that CAPS has been trialling the range in Australian manufacturing and medical applications.

“For the select customers we have been trialling the range with in Australia, we have seen tangible results in direct energy cost savings between 50-75 per cent so far”, said Chan. “Other trials performed internationally have seen savings in the vicinity of 84 per cent for injection moulding and automotive applications to 94-97 per cent for electronic and machinery applications respectively.”

“These trials have allowed us to model a CDRP Payback Calculator, where we can calculate your expected payback period based on estimated energy savings.”
