Cellar fire destroys $1 million worth of vintage wine

A cellar fire in Queensland has destroyed $1 million worth of vintage wine, but the owners are optimistic about a recovery.

The Ballendean Estate Wines cellar, near Stanthorpe went up in flames about 3:40am on Friday, destroying the stock.

The owner, Leanne Puglisi-Gangemi told AAP watching the vintage wine being destroyed by the fire was devastating, as it cannot be easily replaced.

"The two we are lamenting are the generation three shiraz and the world famous sylvaner" she said.

"The sylvaner is only produced every four or five years.

"Hopefully we’ll have one in 2012, but we won’t see them released for a few years. It’s pretty upsetting to lose those wines."

The blaze did not spread to the winery or vineyards and investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Puglisi-Gangemi said production will restart in about eight weeks.
