Centralised operations for future growth

South Australian meat wholesaler Holco has consolidated its Turners Butchers division into its upgraded central headquarters at Cavan.

In February this year, Turners Butchers food service operations moved from their Underdale plant into the expanded Cavan facilities of Holco.

The move aims to capitalise on the group’s recent growth and to best position it for future expansion.

“Integrating the Turners operations into Holco is a major positive and exciting step for our company,” Holco managing director, Michael Rankin said.

“Holco has made a significant investment in our Cavan facility to ensure we have a world-class operation that offers many processing, packing, food quality and safety advantages.

“The cold storage capabilities at Cavan provide unparalleled access to a vast range of stock.

“By integrating the two businesses on one site we can reduce double handling and improve hygiene standards. There will be greater depth of management for the whole business, and consolidation of our sales group, to provide greater clarity in our sales direction.”

The recently completed upgrade of Holco’s Cavan facilities involved 1842sqm of extra production space taking the overall plant size to over 7000sqm and new laser portioning equipment as well as improved labelling and scanning capabilities.

“Integrating a multi-million dollar business into a larger group can be quite a challenge. However. all the staff pulled together and we had the equipment and stock in, and staff all at their new work stations, over a three day period with no disruption to customer service.”

There are now 148 staff working at Cavan, and the company remains confident that the move will work to strengthen the quality, food safety and service standards to their customers.”

South Australian owned and operated, Holco supplies fresh meat products to supermarkets, State Government organisations, commercial caterers, hotel groups, major events and restaurants.

As a food service division of Holco, Turners Butchers was a South Australian company name servicing the local market and hospitality industry since 1854.

Each week more than 270 tonnes of fresh meat products including beef, chicken, lamb and pork leaves Holco’s Cavan headquarters, ultimately destined for the plates of diners across South Australia and interstate.
