CHOICE names and tests 20 meat pies

CHOICE has named and tested 20 meat pies that are available in supermarkets to see which was the most nutritious, meatiest and tastiest.

The overall winner was Elmsbury (Aldi) Bakehouse Premium Grain Fed Beef Pie.

“It had good meat content, was comparatively lower in fat and sodium, and tasted good. While not the cheapest pie we tested, it does offer value for money as a premium pie that’s nutritionally better than others on the market,” Christopher Zinn, CHOICE spokesperson, said.

Herbert Adams King Island Gourmet Premium Beef Pies have 38.5 per cent meat, taking out first place for the meatiest pie, while Four’N Twenty took out the tastiest meat pie category, followed closely by Black & Gold.

According to CHOICE, to qualify for the name ‘meat pie’, a pie has to contain 25 per cent ‘meat flesh’ as defined by the Food Standards Code.
