Coca-Cola enters coconut water category

Coca-Cola South Pacific has launched a not-from-concentrate coconut water, Zico, available in Coles stores from November.

Packaged in resealable tetra packs, the coconut water comes in both a 330mL and a 1L size, and is targeting health conscious consumers.

“We’re excited to launch ZICO and deliver Aussies with a premium coconut water which supports hydration through various electrolytes and provides consumers with a great source of potassium and zero fat,” said Ramona Spiteri, Zico brand manager.

There's been considerable growth in the number of coconut-based product launches recently, with Innova Market Insights reporting that the ingredient featured in over four percent of global soft drink launches in the 12 months leading to June 2014.

“With sales of traditional carbonates and still drinks relatively static in many markets, the industry appears to be turning to coconut water, which seems well placed for the task of driving growth with its exotic image, unusual flavour and natural hydration properties,” said Lu Ann Williams, director of innovation at Innova Market Insights.
