Coles Express named major retailer of the year

Coles Express has been named Major Retailer of the Year by the Australasian Association of Convenience Stores (AACS) at their Gala Awards Dinner & Peter Jowett Industry Award Finals in Sydney on 26 August 2009.

The awards recognise the quality of the partnerships between retailers and suppliers and measure performance throughout the year, as judged by AACS supplier members.

Coles Express General Manager Merchandise and Marketing, Peter Struck, said this is the second year in a row that Coles Express has taken out this top award and also confirms AC Neilson results that show Coles Express is the fastest growing c-store for three years running.

“The awards highlight the strong relationships that our buyers have with our suppliers. As a result, we’re able to negotiate great deals for our customers.”

“This award is also a fantastic boost for our team and highlights our commitment to driving innovation and growth in key product categories,” he said.

Peter said Coles Express works closely with suppliers to spread the word to customers about new products.

“Our customers love trying new products and we’re always looking at opportunities to be ‘first to market’.

The Wrigley’s 5 gum launch was a recent prime example of a new product that’s getting some real cut through to our customers — and we’re happy to be part of the excitement!”

“We’re currently working with a range of suppliers to bring fantastic new products to our stores — so keep an eye out!” he said.

Advantage Group surveyed AACS supplier members, with a focus on Category Management, Innovation, Accessibility and Communication.

Coles Express was one of seven retailers up for the Major Retailer of the Year award. Major convenience suppliers were included on the judging panel across the following merchandise categories: beverages, confectionery, snack foods, dairy, bread, tobacco, and convenience food.

AACS is a not for profit trade association representing the interests of its member organisations within the convenience retailing industry.

They are made up of members from the smallest retailer to the largest channel supplier and is the only body exclusively representing the interests of the convenience channel for retailers and suppliers in Australia
