Construction of the new Sydney Fish Market has been completed, with the keys handed over to Sydney Fish Market for the final fit-outs.

The new Sydney Fish Market extends over the water, joining the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. It is expected to attract more than six million domestic and international visitors, with a new glass façade providing views of live fish auctions.

“Today’s milestone is an opportunity to reflect on all the hard work that has gone in to to complete this magnificent building on Sydney’s harbour foreshore,” said NSW premier Chris Minns.

“From today the Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd will take custodianship of the building and get it ready to open to the public on 19 January 2026.”

The structure is supported by 481 marine piles and 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement, with over 400 roof cassettes and 594 glulam timber beams delivered by barge from Glebe Island. The roof is designed to allow daylight into upper levels, collect rainwater for recycling, and generate solar energy to offset the building’s consumption. Multi-coloured LED lights can illuminate the roof for events. The project removed over 5,650 truck movements from local roads, setting a new benchmark for sustainability.

The site features over 6,000 square metres of accessible public space. Cultural and historical storytelling is integrated throughout the Civic Plaza with five installations that honour the area’s First Nations heritage and industrial past. Under the building, seawall tiles, coral panels and hanging fish habitats support marine life in Blackwattle Bay.

“It is incredibly exciting to have reached practical completion of the building and for work to ramp up on all the finishing touches and retail fit outs ahead of opening next year,” said minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper.

“The new Sydney Fish Market will be more than just a food and retail precinct it will stand as a testament to sustainability and cultural connection.

“It will become a truly iconic destination on the western side of the Harbour Bridge, as the Opera House is to the east.”

Construction created more than 700 jobs, with the new market sustaining 700 ongoing roles. Around $670 million in contracts were awarded to Australian businesses. Retail space will double compared to the current fish market, offering a mix of local seafood traders, specialty food retailers, and dining options from casual takeaway to premium waterfront restaurants.

“We’re excited to see our retailers’ impressive fit-outs come to life ahead of opening early in the new year,” said Sydney Fish Market CEO Daniel Jarosch.

“Sydneysiders will enjoy a last hurrah at the existing fish market over the busy festive season, while we work behind the scenes for a seamless transition to our outstanding new home.”
