Drought pushes Thanksgiving prices higher in the US

Consumers in the United States will have to pay more for their Thanksgiving turkey this year, after widespread droughts pushed the price of livestock feed higher.

Darlene Tewes, who owns the Tewes Poultry Farm in Kentucky, said while the price of feed had skyrocketed, the cost passed on to US consumers would be marginal.

“Because of the drought, our feed prices have gone up by about 50 per cent, so we did have to increase the price of our turkeys to make up for that,” she told the Kentucky Post.

“The cost has gone up by about $5 a turkey.”

Customers not buying direct from farms can also expect to pay marginally more, with the drought pushing up supermarket prices for the meat by about 20 cents a pound.
