Following an extensive selection process, Tristan Butt has been appointed as End Food Waste Australia’s (EFWA) new chief executive officer (CEO).

EFWA is a national organisation dedicated to driving action on food waste through science-based solutions. With its collaborative and commercial approaches, EFWA works towards delivering measurable and systematic change.

With the appointment of Butt – who has a track record of commercial success and impactful stakeholder engagement across the food industry – EFWA aims to halve food waste by 2030.

“Tristan brings a unique blend of commercial discipline, strategic thinking, and values-driven leadership,” said EFWA chair, John Webster.

“As we work to unlock systems change across Australia’s food value chain, his deep understanding of the industry and supply chains end-to-end, coupled with his passion for impact and sustainability, make him the ideal leader to take EFWA forward as we scale our efforts to end food waste nationally.”

Each year, an estimated $37 billion is spent on food waste. To further develop productivity in the food and agribusiness sectors, EFWA is working towards shifting investments for system-wide thinking and solutions.

With experience in driving sustainable growth nationally and internationally – including at Woolworths, Harris Farm Markets, Kerry Foods and Mars – Butt expressed his drive to create change for Australia.

“It’s a huge privilege to step into this role at such an important moment,” he said.

“The scale of food waste in Australia is staggering — but so is the opportunity to create change.

“I’m energised by EFWA’s mission and look forward to working across government, industry, education and community to deliver real impact.

“We can’t afford to treat food waste as an inevitability. It’s a solvable problem — and together, we will solve it.”

Butt will formally commence as CEO on 5 May 2025.
