Frießinger Mühle is using VEGA Inventory System and radar level sensors to improve stock visibility, automate inventory management and streamline flour production and delivery processes.

For industrial flour manufacturers, accurate inventory visibility is essential to maintaining production continuity and managing increasingly complex product ranges. German flour mill Frießinger Mühle has introduced digital inventory management technology to improve stock monitoring, automate warehousing processes and support production planning across its operations.

Based in Bad Wimpfen, the family owned mill produces around 400,000 tonnes of flour annually and operates more than 23,000 tonnes of grain storage capacity. Each day, up to 1,200 tonnes of grain are delivered to the site, while a similar volume of finished flour products is dispatched by truck and ship. The company also manages a broad product portfolio, producing around 200 million packaged units each year ranging from 500g retail packs to 25kg commercial formats.

According to Willi Erich Frießinger, the sixth generation preparing to lead the business, customer demand for specialised flour products continues to grow.

“Our goal is to supply our customers with flour varieties tailored exactly to their needs,” he said.

Alongside standard flour grades, the company produces specialised products including pizza flour, waffle mixes, spaetzle flour and customised baking blends designed for individual bakery production systems.

“Bakeries need customised flours, precisely tailored to their individual production methods,” said Frießinger.

To manage this complexity, the company uses VEGA Inventory System software integrated with VEGAPULS 6X radar sensors installed across more than 200 measurement points throughout the facility. The system provides real time monitoring of silo levels, stock movement, filling and emptying rates, allowing operators to manage inventory and production planning from a central control room.

Plant manager Klaus Hecht said the software improves the company’s ability to respond to changing supply and production demands.

“This allows us to diversify our sources of supply and react quickly to short term increases in demand for individual goods,” said Hecht.

The inventory platform also analyses historical consumption data to forecast future material requirements and support procurement planning. For manufacturers balancing storage costs, customer demand and market pricing, the system reduces the need for manual stock monitoring while improving operational visibility.

Following the expansion of the facility with a third 63 metre high mill building, Frießinger Mühle has continued increasing its use of digital inventory technologies to support production efficiency and supply chain planning.
