Food and beverage packaging manufacturers shine at 2024 PIDA awards

Winners for the 2024 round of the annual Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards have been announced and include an array of food and beverage packaging solutions and innovations.

The awards were presented at a gala awards evening at the Shangri-La, The Rocks, Sydney on the 16th of August.

Coordinated by the AIP, the PIDA awards are designed to recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their field across Australia and New Zealand.

The Packaging Innovation & Design of the Year company awards recognise organisations that have designed innovative packaging within six categories.

koor took home this year’s Food Packaging Design Award which recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging materials for food products.

koor’s mission is to replace single-use plastics with a smarter, refillable, reusable, and more sustainable alternative.

koor offers sustainability, simplicity, and style for meal prepping, packing lunches, or on the go, saving families up to $480 per person annually with bulk buying and local sourcing.

Its replaceable components extend packaging lifespan and ensure its responsibly recyclable at the end.

The Beverage Packaging Design Award was awarded to Integrally Moulded Handle (IMH) Bottle by Integrated Plastics.

This award recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging for beverages, including liquid or dry tea, coffee, water, soft drinks, wine, beer, and spirits.

The IMH PET bottle is the world’s first to feature an integrally moulded ‘through’ handle. This fully recyclable, food-grade PET/rPET polymer bottle requires no separation at the recycling stage.

Its design can replicate existing packaging while reducing freight costs by up to 350 per cent and lowering the carbon footprint.

The 2024 Marketing Design gold winner is the Premium Grapes Paper Bunch Bag from Costa Group and The Packaging Hippie.

The product used an innovative see-through mesh paper window to maintain product visibility while transitioning from plastic to eco-friendly paper.

The 2024 Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design gold winner is Deli Cuts from Don Smallgoods, which features a resealable flow-wrapped envelope pack with an easy-grip design.

The product also featured a friction-enhanced film, and clear, high-contrast instructions, ensuring convenience, freshness and reduced waste.

The 2024 Save Food Packaging Design gold winner is the Cryovac FlexPrep Portion Dispensing Pouches for McDonald’s Australia (Sealed Air).

The pouches feature portion control, excellent oxygen barrier properties, and a stackable, lightweight design that reduces waste and spoilage.

The pouches also optimise fridge space, and support McDonald’s sustainability goals by cutting landfill waste and preserving food quality.

Finally, the 2024 Sustainable Packaging Design – Plastics Reduction gold winner is Maggi Mug Noodles 4 Pack – Chicken and Beef Flavour from Nestlé Australia.

This project is set to reduce virgin plastic use by 26 tonnes annually, achieves an 83 per cent reduction in plastic packaging per serve.

It has the potential to cut CO2 outputs by over 400 tonnes per year, and features recycle-ready components with the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) to guide proper disposal.

The PIDA Awards are also the exclusive feeder program for Australia and New Zealand for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards run by the World Packaging Organisation.

All 2023 PIDA winners will be automatically eligible for entry into the 2025 WorldStar Packaging Awards competition.
