The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) has announced the appointment of Bernie Brookes AM as chair of its board.
With more than four decades of experience in executive and board-level roles in the retail and consumer goods sectors both nationally and internationally, Brookes is set to navigate the AFGC through transformation and growth.
Brookes was formerly CEO of Myer Australia and Edcon in South Africa. He also held senior leadership roles, including executive director at Woolworths Australia.
“Bernie’s leadership and strategic insight will be instrumental in advancing the Council’s mission to support a thriving, competitive, and sustainable food and grocery sector,” said AFGC CEO Colm Maguire.
“His experience across retail and governance makes him uniquely positioned to lead the Board at a time of significant industry evolution.”
Serving on numerous boards across a range of industries, Brookes is currently chair of Direct Group (Innovations and TVSN). Maguire noted that the appointment will enhance transparency and trust.
“The appointment of an independent chair to the Board of Directors marks a positive step forward in strengthening the governance of the AFGC, ensuring objective leadership, enhancing transparency, and reinforcing trust among members, industry partners, and the broader community,” he added.
With cost-of-living pressures and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, strong industry representation is crucial to guiding the sector with a focus on technology, productivity, and sustainability, according to Brookes.
“The food and grocery sector is a cornerstone of Australia’s economy and community wellbeing. I look forward to working with the Board and AFGC members to support innovation, resilience, and sustainable growth across the industry,” said Brookes.
Former chair Anthony Holme will continue his contribution as a member of the board.
