Food production inquiry

A Federal Parliamentary select committee will hold an inquiry into how Australia can produce enough food for itself and export markets during the current and future global warming scares.

The inquiry will also consider how food can be kept affordable, while considering effects on farmers.

Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan said the inquiry will examine all the disincentives for farmers to keep producing.

“It will be about looking at everything from the impact of carbon emissions, carbon trading on the future of agriculture, the change of land use,” he said.

“It will look at the speculation impact of commodity traders on food prices, consolidated retailing, world cartels in fertiliser, fuel and chemicals.”
