Sydney Rum Distillery (SRD) unveiled its plans to transform the former Oak factory site in Muswellbrook into a spirits facility on Friday.
With a factory tour starting at 6.30 am, more than 200 business leaders, community representatives, and government officials gathered for the briefing. The strong turnout highlighted support for the region’s economic diversification and business expansion initiatives.
Chief executive officer and master distiller of SRD, Steve Magarry, presented the company’s vision to create jobs, boost tourism, and expand into international markets through the distillery.
“We very much have a collaborative focus involving the community,” said Magarry.
“We will develop our brand while involving the local history and heritage.”
The project demonstrates how repurposing existing infrastructure can create sustainable economic opportunities. SRD aims to:
- Create up to 24 full-time jobs in the region.
- Finalise packaged and bulk spirits brand opportunities.
- Expand international distribution beyond its current presence in ten markets.
- Capitalise on the growing global demand for premium spirits with Australian provenance.
The event, attended by senior representatives from major employers and industry organisations, reinforced the potential for investment, innovation, and collaboration.
“I’m just delighted to be here in the old Oak factory in Muswellbrook,” said federal assistant minister for Manufacturing, Tim Ayres.
“This is an iconic facility that Sydney Rum Distillery is repurposing into a place that makes fantastic Australian rum and brandy and employs local Muswellbrook people. It’s such a positive addition to the local economy and the local community.”
“SRD promises to be an exciting addition to the region with potential to create jobs, attract tourists to Muswellbrook and surrounding areas, generate local opportunities, and add to the region’s economy,” added CEO of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Hunter Kate O’Mara.
“We look forward to watching the development take shape.”
The Hunter Valley location provides strategic advantages for SRD, including access to wine barrels and ideal climate conditions.
SRD plans for the site to be operational in July 2025.
