FSANZ recalls foods containing weight-loss medication

Three brands of imported coffee and chocolate have been recalled from sale by Food Standards Australia New Zealand after they were found to contain sibutramine, a prescription weight-loss medication not permitted in foods.

The recalled products, marketed and labelled as ‘slimming foods’, were:

•    Moti Angel Coffee
•    Sumabe Acai Berry Coffee
•    Leptin weight loss chocolate

The products were not labelled as containing sibutramine, despite FSANZ finding high levels of the chemical that could affect cardiovascular health.

Sibutramine was withdrawn from the market in Australia on 9 October 2010 after results from the Sibutramine Cardiovascular OUTcomes (SCOUT) health study showed the weight-loss medication was linked to higher rates of heart attacks and strokes in obese or overweight patients.

The NSW Food Authority is conducting further tests in a range of similar products for the presence of sibutramine.
