Future Proof Distilling is a brand-new distilling company based in Glen Iris, Victoria, and is launching the first products in its range, created by the Deeds Brewing team.
The Black Flank Whisky and the Greater Glider Gin are both locally made and pay homage to Australia, celebrating its natural beauty, while supporting the conservation of its wildlife. Future Proof Distilling has partnered with WIRES, Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation that protects Australia’s endangered species.
With every bottle purchase of Black Flank Whisky or the Greater Glider Gin, $1 will be donated to WIRES. Black Flank Whisky ($95) takes inspiration from the endangered black-flanked rock wallaby which lives in mountainous areas across Australia.
It’s created from a single malt mash bill using Saison yeast which is then matured in a blend of bourbon and red wine barrels. On the nose it has hints of caramel, fortified wine and vanilla aromas.
Expect a taste of liquorice, grape, sherbet, orange slice and an orchid fruit. The whisky has a medium finish with crème brûlée and lemon tart notes.
The Black Flank Whisky pays homage to the resilient spirit of this shy marsupial. Sadly, due to human activity and natural disasters, this unique species now faces the threat of extinction.
“In a country with some of the world’s most unique and fragile ecosystems, our passionate team came together with a mission to craft spirits that celebrated Australia’s natural beauty and supported the conservation of its wildlife,” said Future Proof distiller, Jace Yendall.
“We’re passionate about showcasing the flavours and botanicals of the region and are committed to doing so in a way that was environmentally responsible, while also crafting exceptional spirits.”
The Greater Glider Gin ($85) is a tribute to the majestic and vulnerable gliding mammal which live in eucalyptus forests. Heavily inspired by the botanicals found in the Greater Glider’s natural habitat, this new world gin boasts a unique blend of macadamia honey mead and native botanicals.
Expect bold juniper, rounded citrus and eucalyptus flower on the nose, with mountain pepper and spice rounding out the taste. Roasted wattle seed and cocoa give it slightly sweet and early finish. With its population plummeting by 80 per cent in just two decades, the Greater Glider urgently needs support, which inspired the creation of this new gin.
“We’ve worked tirelessly to perfect our recipes, sourcing only the finest native ingredients and incorporating sustainable practices every step of the way,” said Future Proof distiller Ben Ryan.
“We experimented with different botanicals and flavours, testing and refining until we had created a range of spirits that captured the essence of Australia.
“We’re not just banking on our donations to give us credit for conservation – we’re making genuine moves with our products and packaging to support our native wildlife. Our labels are crafted from paper milled from sustainable forests, and the dyes used are bleach-free and sustainable.
“Our bottles are recyclable, and if mailed back along with the stopper to the Future Proof Distilling, customers can get 10 per cent off their next purchase.”
