Getting Naked with prebiotic pizzas down under

Prebiotic pizzas will soon be available in Australia once the US-based company Naked Pizza takes its business down under later this year.

The pizza company, which goes under the slogan, “all-natural, no freaky chemicals,” offers a range of pizzas made from prebiotic dough mix of more than 10 seeds and grains, fortified with a probiotics.

Probiotics – are microorganisms that live in the gut – occur naturally in some foods and have been linked to health benefits such as boosting digestion.

Prebiotics, on the other hand, are indigestible food ingredients (commonly found in carbohydrate fibres) that promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms, such as probiotics, in the gut.

While probiotics and prebiotics are found in some yoghurts, it is the first time any manufacturer has used the functional foods in pizza.

According to Naked Pizza, it uses a prebiotic agave fibre, an ingredient, which the company says, helps boost bone development by increasing the rate of calcium absorption.

Unlike the probiotics found in yoghurts, heat-resistant probiotics are used in the company’s pizzas to ensure they survive the baking process.

According to Head of Paleobiotics Lab in New Mexico, Jeff Leach, the pizzas do really work to help balance digestion.

“We’ve tested the product, and we’ve got the manufacturer nailed down,” Leach told foodnavigator-usa.com. “We’ll be rolling it out over the next few months.”

Naked Pizza’s products will be available in Australia by the end of the year, according to the company’s Facebook page.
