The Australian Government has funded nearly $3 million to Shepparton Foodshare to help more Australians access food relief closer to home.

Investing $6 million in this year’s Budget to support the Regional Food Security Alliance and six regional foodshares in Victoria, the new purpose-built warehouse in Mooroopna marks a major milestone for the charity in its 13-year history.

Distributing around 390,000 kilograms of food annually, Shepparton Foodshare sources from supermarkets, manufacturers, growers and food rescue agencies. Since 2012, it has provided nearly 10 million meals to over 100 emergency relief agencies, schools and local organisations.

“Shepparton Foodshare is there for the community when it matters most – providing nourishing meals to people doing it tough and offering a lifeline for communities across the Goulburn Valley,” said minister for regional development of Victoria Jaclyn Symes.

The new facility significantly increases the organisation’s capacity to store, prepare and distribute food. It also offers a modern and safe working space for staff and volunteers.

“We’re proud of our investment in Shepparton Foodshare’s new warehouse to ensure they can continue this vital work,” said minister for carers and volunteers Ros Spence.

“It’s part of our support in backing stronger and more resilient communities right across regional Victoria.”

A total of $18 million is included in this year’s Budget aimed to expand food relief across the state. The budget also includes $9 million to support a second round of the Community Food Relief Program.

Foodbank Victoria will also receive a $500,000 funding boost to deliver more fresh and chilled food to regional communities, along with $3 million to support its GROW food relief program.

“No family should have to wonder where their next meal is coming from – that’s why we’re backing the local organisations making a difference every day on the ground,” said premier Jacinta Allan.

“And by doubling support for food relief programs, we’re making sure more Victorians don’t have to face the impossible choice between putting food on the table and paying the bills.”

Since 2020, the Australian Government has invested more than $74 million in food relief, helping ensure Australians can access the support they need.
