Jet Technologies launches bio-plastics coffee packaging

Jet Technologies has launched the first high-volume bio-plastics coffee packaging solution in Australia. This is the first-time Australian coffee manufacturers are able to present their coffee beans in packaging that is fully biodegradable, but still strong enough to protect the quality of the product.

Jet Technologies will begin distributing the Goglio biodegradable laminate to sustainability-minded coffee manufacturers from February 2018.

“While in the past many businesses prioritised how eye-catching their coffee packaging was to consumers and the cost, due to rising consumer knowledge of and pressure to reduce waste and its impact on the environment, they are now having to consider environmental sustainability as a top priority,” explained Daniel Malki, General Manager, Jet Technologies.

“In response, many packaging companies within the Australian marketplace are assuring businesses that their coffee packaging options are ‘environmentally friendly’, ‘eco friendly’, ‘green’ or ‘biodegradable’. However, this is often not fully the case, or if it is, it means the packaging may not have the correct barrier properties to protect and maintain the quality of the coffee beans it carries.”

Until now, there have been no packaging companies in Australia offering coffee packaging that is truly biodegradable and has the ability to maintain packaging strength and the integrity and freshness of the coffee product it contains. This is because to maintain product quality by withstanding the packing production process, logistics of handling and travel, coffee packaging needs a strong laminate lining.

What sets the new Jet Technologies Goglio packaging solution apart from other options available locally is that it comes with a biodegradable barrier that increases packaging strength and protects the quality and freshness of the coffee inside it. The biodegradable laminate is fully recyclable and breaks down over time naturally.

This specialty laminate is only compatible with certain form fill seal packing machinery.

“For many coffee manufacturers and retailers, the availability of a fully functional biodegradable coffee packaging solution, will offer a true incentive to move to a more sustainable way forward when it comes to their product packaging,” Malki added.
