Live cattle export workers to get $3m compensation package

Posted by Rita Mu

The Federal Government has announced a $3 million compensation package for workers who have been affected by the ban on live cattle exports to Indonesia.

Agriculture Minister Senator Joe Ludwig said the financial assistance, which will be made through Centrelink, will be available to affected workers for up to 13 weeks, according to ABC News Online.

But Chairman of Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Don Heatley, said the cattle industry was not after compensation.

"There are people who will talk about compensation, but in the end they all say the same thing – don’t bother with compensation, get the trade moving; put the money into the area that will actually open the trade," he told ABC News Online.

The Federal Government is still trying to convince MLA to compensate cattle produces by making $5 million available from contingency funds.
