Cocoa used to make Mars Bars will now be sourced from sustainable farms in West Africa, according to Mars Chocolate Australia.
The company will begin sourcing the cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms from June, with all Mars Bar products displaying the certification on their packaging after this month.
Mars Chocolate Australia said sourcing its cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms will help farmers and their families in West Africa to improve their productivity and their profitability.
Spokesperson for Rainforest Alliance Australia, Anita Neville, said: “The move by Mars Chocolate Australia to Rainforest Alliance Certified Mars Bar shows a real commitment to sustainable farming. When companies with the scale and heritage of Mars show this level of leadership, the results are measurable improvements in the quality of life for cocoa farmers, their families and communities, and a cleaner, greener environment for all of us.”
The certified cocoa sourced for Mars Bar will originally come from the Ivory Coast. Mars Chocolate Australia said they will be purchasing 1150 tonnes of Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa beans for its Mars Bar chocolate this year.
