The Queensland Government is seeking feedback from businesses and the community on a new 30 year plan for the state’s agriculture sector.
The strategy aims to double the value of food production by 2040 as rising populations, economic uncertainty, and higher costs squeeze food producers.
Despite the challenges minister for agriculture, fisheries and forestry John McVeigh said QLD was well positioned to take advantage of future opportunities.
“The global population is expected to increase from seven billion to almost nine billion by 2040, characterised by the increasingly affluent and growing global middle class, particularly in Asia,” he said.
“Queensland is strategically placed to supply growing demand from our neighbouring countries, and contribute to global food security as a significant food bowl for Asia.”
The consultation paper is available here and submissions close 7 December.
