The Metcash distribution centre spans an impressive 68,000m2 and features a 50,500m2 ambient warehouse and temperature controlled zones.

National design and construction company, Ahrens, have played a valuable role in feeding the supermarket supply chain with the delivery of an expansive new distribution centre for Australia’s leading wholesaler, Metcash.

Major supermarket retailers including Foodland and IGA, as well as liquor retailers, Cellarbrations and The Bottle-O, are now able to better meet customer demand with the centre delivering operational efficiencies to the Metcash retailer network in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

As Australia’s leading vertically-integrated company offering design, construct, engineering and fabrication capabilities, Ahrens had all the right skills to deliver this mammoth project from start to finish.

The scope of the project included a 50,500m2 ambient warehouse, 14,800m2 temperature-controlled chiller/freezer and a 2,900moffice and amenities complex.

Further works included operation dispatch and receival, plant room, services, and charging bays for almost 200 forklifts, which will service the expansive facility.

With 53 loading docks, the facility also provides greater delivery/pick up flexibility for retailers and an increased dock area in both grocery and perishables.

External to the building, the site consists of 300 car parking spaces and 52,000m2 of concrete hardstand.

The fit-for-purpose design also features a number of environmentally conscious elements to achieve a 5-star Green star rating, including solar panels and bio-retention stormwater basins.

The new facility located in Gepps Cross South Australia replaced Metcash’s existing distribution centre at Kidman Park, providing them with a greater range capacity for grocery, perishables and liquor items.

The project affirms Ahrens’ long-established relationship with Metcash, with this being the seventh project Ahrens has completed nationally for the company in the past 20 years.

Ahrens’ collaborative, hands-on approach to delivering high quality, value-for-money results continues to see clients return to them time and time again.
