The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) is calling for submissions to inform its review of the Australian chicken meat industry.
ABARES has been authorised to conduct an independent review of the growers and producers within the Australian chicken meat supply chain.
The review will examine the industry’s evolution over time and assess whether there is evidence of market failure. Market failures typically arise from one of three main causes:
- Market concentration.
- Availability of information.
- The nature of the good (e.g. public goods and externalities).
Where market failures are identified, there may be a role for government intervention to improve outcomes. Any potential actions to address these failures will be considered. Information from recent industry inquiries will also be taken into account during the review.
Stakeholder engagement will be conducted across all relevant parts of the chicken meat industry. A draft report for stakeholder review is expected by mid-2025, with a final report to government to follow shortly after.
Submissions can be made via the department’s ‘Have Your Say’ page or directly by email. While submissions will be made available to interested parties, they will not be published.
The submissions will close on 30 May 2025.
