New Zealand gets a peas of Aussie trade

Australia’s devastating drought has opened a new market for New Zealand’s pea growers.

Food wholesalers across the Tasman in New South Wales say they are having to source fresh and dried peas from Kiwi suppliers because of the state’s poor pea harvest.

“We source from growers and we’ve not had much luck,” said Imported Food Wholesalers Gaganis Bros, company director Emanouel Gaganis.

“There’s definitely been a big shortage, to the extent that some people haven’t been able to get stock. Canada and the US, for example, where a lot of imported beans come from, have certainly been the subject of harsh weather as well.”

Coles has recently delisted the company’s dried peas but they can still be found in independent supermarkets such as IGA or Franklins.
