Olive oil labelling set to tighten

Labels on olive oil are set to change in June to help consumers better understand what they are buying.

According to ABC News Online, a committee addressed nearly 800 submissions last week in response to draft standards for olive oil labelling.

"Some of the ‘light’, ‘extra light’ and ‘pure’ categories are looking at being abolished, because they don’t actually have any relevance and are confusing for consumers," Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Olive Association, Lisa Rowntree, told ABC News Online.

"The hope would be that with more extra virgin oil on the shelves, that consumers would select a higher percentage of the Australian product, over the imported product."
