A market organised by the Australian Food and Wine Collaboration Group will be held in Tokyo this April to increase export opportunities for Australia’s food and wine producers.
Taste the Wonders of Australia marks the Collaboration Group’s sixth target market, following previous events in Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan. This event is part of an ongoing effort strengthen bilateral trade relations with Japan.
Japan is Australia’s third-largest agriculture, fisheries and forestry export market, valued at $6.3 billion between 2023 and 2024.
Taste the Wonders of Australia events will include:
- Export market discussions between industry and government contacts.
- Food and wine workshops with local food industry representatives.
- Taste the Wonders of Australia Gala Dinner.
“Australia has built a strong reputation amongst Japanese trade and consumers as a source of high-quality beef and lamb backed by a robust, world-class supply chain,” said Meat & Livestock Australia’s regional manager Travis Brown.
“In 2024, Japan imported 247,353 tonnes of Australian beef, and Australia had a market-leading share of just over 45 per cent of the total beef category.”
Over the past two years, the Collaboration Group has engaged with more than 1,000 food, trade and government representatives. It has involved Meat & Livestock Australia, Dairy Australia, Hort Innovation, Wine Australia and Seafood Industry Australia.
To further improve market access for Australian producers, the group has leveraged individual sectors’ export strengths, expanding both industry and government networks.
“Australian producers have worked hard over the years to meet Japan’s demand for quality produce, which has, in turn, helped improve our processes and our presentation and sharpened our competitive edge,” said Dairy Australia Sustainable International Trade senior manager, Catherine Taylor.
“It’s more than just a transactional relationship for both parties. In agrifood we have a highly complementary, counter-seasonal partnership and we are invested in each other’s success.
“Japan will always be one of the world’s largest net importers of food and Australia’s agrifood export sector needs trusted, stable partners.”
The Australian Food and Wine Collaboration Group’s Taste the Wonders of Australia market activation will take place in Tokyo on 9 April.
