Three Food Organics, Garden Organics (FOGO) systems have rolled out to the City of Rockingham, allowing more than 570,000 households to ensure the compost produced is clean, safe and ready to use.
The rollout of the FOGO system marks a milestone in reducing landfill and increasing recycling rates. FOGO is a component of the government’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030, which focuses on building a low-waste circular economy.
“It’s fantastic to see the City of Rockingham join the growing number of councils making the switch to FOGO,” said environment minister Matthew Swinbourn.
“When households sort their waste correctly through FOGO, the downstream positive impacts to our environment are real and make a big difference.”
The FOGO system also contributes to the growth of the food and beverage sector. By collecting food and garden organics separately, household waste can be turned into compost and soil products used in agriculture. The circular economy benefits the food industry while helping to keep the environment green.
“FOGO will help our community improve the environment by turning food and garden waste into valuable products like nutrient-rich compost,” said city of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin.
“FOGO is a smart, sustainable solution that benefits our environment, our economy, and our community.”
