Paper wine bottles take eco packaging to the next level

Paperboy, a new brand of wine in the UK is taking environmentally friendly packaging to the next level by packaging its wine in cardboard sleeves.

According to Paperboy’s website, their product is the first 100 percent fully recyclable wine. The packaging is 80 percent lighter than glass so it requires less fuel to transport, and it is made with ‘ultra-green’ packaging materials.

As reported by Businessweek, the packaging itself is made by UK packaging company, GreenBottle, and is moulded from paper pulp and lined with a plastic bladder. Paperboy says that in addition to its environmental credentials, the packaging insulates the wine – keeping it cooler for longer, and also has no risk of breaking unlike traditional glass packaging.

According to Businessweek, the unique packaging was the brainchild of graphic designer Kevin Shaw, who pitched the idea to Truett Hurst wines. Truett-Hurst estimates that one cross-country truck of Paperboy wine has the capacity to save 61 gallons of fuel, and prevent 1,365 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

While wine purists may not approve of cardboard packaging, Paperboy isn’t phased as they say that their target market is not that of wine connoisseurs. Paperboy retails for around US$15 per bottle.
