Powering Up the Valley: How Supagas fuels cotton, malt, and culinary delights

Southern Cotton, Whitton Malthouse, and Voyager Craft Malt are three thriving businesses that have become cornerstones of the Riverina region in New South Wales.

Though they operate in different sectors—cotton production, artisanal malting, and culinary tourism—these businesses share a common foundation: their operations are powered by a reliable and sustainable energy supply from Supagas.

Through tailored bulk LPG solutions, Supagas has helped them grow, innovate, and thrive, supporting both their industries and the local economy.

Supagas first partnered with Southern Cotton in 2011, when the newly constructed cotton gin required a reliable energy source.

“We designed and installed a 90,000-litre gas tank to support Southern Cotton’s operations, which run 24/7 during the cotton season,” says John Scanu, Bulk LPG business development manager at Supagas.

As Southern Cotton expanded into ventures like Whitton Malthouse and Voyager Craft Malt, Supagas continued to provide essential energy support.

“When the other businesses became operational, we adapted the infrastructure to power all three operations, ensuring a seamless energy supply,” Scanu explains.

In 2019, Southern Cotton partnered with Voyager Craft Malt to build a state-of-the-art malting facility specialising in small-batch artisanal malts. Sourcing premium grains from the Riverina, Voyager Craft Malt quickly became a leader in its field, winning the 2022 Gold Award for the World’s Best Pale Ale Malt.

“Supagas has been crucial in ensuring we meet our production demands,” says Kate O’Callaghan, Executive Director of Southern Cotton.

“Their flexibility has allowed us to focus on creating top-quality malts without concerns over our energy needs.”

Scanu adds: “We’ve ensured Voyager Craft Malt’s operations run efficiently as they expand, with our bulk LPG system continuing to meet their growing requirements.”

In 2022, Whitton Malthouse opened its doors as a hub for culinary experiences and tourism, located next to Voyager Craft Malt. With a restaurant, event spaces, and accommodation, the venue showcases the Riverina’s finest produce, from craft beers to locally sourced dishes. Supagas ensures that Whitton Malthouse runs smoothly year-round.

“Supagas powers everything from our kitchens to our heating systems,” says O’Callaghan.

“Their support has been invaluable as we continue to grow, and we rely on their energy supply to provide the best experience for our guests.”

The synergy between Southern Cotton, Whitton Malthouse, and Voyager Craft Malt is driven by the reliable support of Supagas.

“Whether it’s a sudden need for assistance or ensuring we’re ready for peak production, Supagas has always been just a phone call away,” highlights O’Callaghan.

As these businesses continue to grow and shape the Riverina’s food, beverage, and tourism sectors, they can count on Supagas’ energy solutions to fuel their future success, driving innovation and sustainability across the region.
