Rio Tinto chairman joins SABMiller

Rio Tinto chairman, Jan du Plessis, has joined the board of international brewer SABMiller.

He will step into an independent non-executive role from next month, and will move into the role of chairman in July 2015.

However the new role will not mean du Plessis will step down from Rio Tinto.

“Today’s announcement does not in any way diminish my strong commitment to Rio Tinto,” he said.

“I have assured the board of Rio Tinto that I would like to serve as chairman for several more years, subject of course to the board and shareholders wishing me to do so.”

However as part of the move, du Plessis announced will step down from the role of non-executive director and senior independent director of the Marks and Spencer Group, with plans to leave the company during the first half of next year.

The Marks and Spencer Group is an international, multi-channel retailer, selling high quality clothing, home products and food, sourced from around 3,000 suppliers globally.
