Royal Poms of an Aussie variety

Perfection Fresh, a Fresh produce marketing company, is sending Australia’s first commercial crop of Royal Pom pomegranates to market this week.

Perfection Fresh marketing manager, Lee Carnemolla, said the crop, in-store until June this year, will complement the company’s annual offering of Californian POM Wonderful pomegranates available from October to March.

“Australian consumers have become increasingly familiar with the Wonderful variety due to our successful import program of the past five years,” Carnemolla said.

PMG Agriculture has 200 hectares of Royal Pom pomegranates under cultivation in the Lachlan Valley near Condobolin, NSW, and will increase plantings in both NSW and near Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, to 1000 hectares by 2011.

According to Carnemolla, Royal Pom pomegranates will be available in the fresh produce department of Woolworths supermarkets nationally.

The fruit, sold loose, are expected to retail for between $2.50 and $3 each.

Perfection Fresh’s objective is to double the volume of pomegranates sent to market each year, for the next four years, as it moves to dominate both the domestic and imported pomegranate categories.
