Sports drink with Stevia released

The sugar substitute with no calories – Stevia – has recently been introduced into sports drinks, with a release from Dr Pepper Snapple in the US.

The All Sport Naturally Zero, a zero-calorie sports drink sweetened with rebiana (an all-natural sweetener made from Stevia) has been launched by All Sport and Dr Pepper Snapple Groupin the wake of the interest that has been generated around Stevia since Pepsi and Coca-Cola announced they will launch products with the ingredient late last year.

This followed the reception of approval from the American food regulator – the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr Pepper, Pepsi and Coca-Cola are all focussing on US consumer response to Stevia beverages before considering global expansion.

“We have been working diligently in our R&D center to incorporate Stevia in our products, and in our allied brands, such as All Sport,” said Dr Pepper Snapple Group CEO, Larry Young.

“Taste is king in the beverage industry, but for today’s consumers, health is becoming increasingly important.

“All Sport Naturally Zero delivers a unique proposition for the millions of Americans who exercise regularly and are looking to get the most out of their workouts.”

All Sport Naturally Zero 20-ounce bottles will be available April 2009 in convenience, grocery and specialty retail channels in three flavours: Dragonfruit, Strawberry Star Fruit and Mandarin Orange.
