Keeping workers and products safe

Safety also remains a priority for food manufacturers, particularly as production equipment becomes more automated and modular.

Modern packaging machines and processing systems require intelligent safety concepts that protect both operators and equipment while supporting productivity. SICK provides safety technology services including commissioning, repairs and modernisation, alongside inspection services aligned with international standards and regulations.

Product quality is essential to remain competitiveness in the market. Food and beverage manufacturers operate at high production speeds while maintaining strict quality standards. Packaging lines must accurately verify labels, expiry dates and coding information to minimise product recalls and compliance risks.

SICK’s vision sensors are designed to inspect codes, verify text and monitor packaging quality throughout production. For example, the company’s Inspector 2D vision sensor checks “use-by” dates and printed information on packaged foods and pharmaceuticals. Missing or illegible information can create health risks for consumers and lead to costly product recalls.

The system compares and verifies codes and plain text automatically while predefined inspection tools simplify integration into production lines.

SICK also provides contamination detection technology used before filling containers. Foreign materials such as debris or residues inside containers can compromise product quality and create food safety risks. The company’s Inspector83x 2D vision sensor is designed to identify contamination quickly. This reduces the risk of recalls while supporting faster production throughput.

Helping with inventory

Beyond packaging and inspection, the company also develops systems for traceability and product tracking. SICK’s track and trace systems use barcode, 2D code and RFID technologies to support serialisation, aggregation and inventory visibility.

The company offers technologies ranging from compact integrated sensors to configurable standalone systems and programmable cameras. Part of this offering extends to the company’s understanding that automation is also expanding further into warehouse and intralogistics environments – something that is often overlooked.

As manufacturers adopt autonomous technologies, pallet quality has emerged as an operational issue. Damaged pallets can disrupt automated systems, causing conveyor stoppages, robot misalignment, load instability and equipment damage.

To address this, SICK has developed its Pallet Inspection Systems, known as PAIS, which use 3D vision and AI-based inspection tools to identify pallet defects before they enter automated material handling flows. The system detects issues including missing boards, cracked timber, protruding nails, twisted blocks and dimensional deviations.

According to SICK, PAIS can identify missing wood areas as small as one square centimetre and cracks measuring three by three millimetres. By removing defective pallets from circulation before they enter automated systems, the technology helps reduce unplanned downtime and equipment damage.

The inspection system creates a full 3D model of each pallet, analysing the top, sides, bottom and internal structures. This allows manufacturers to detect warped decks, uneven boards and structural deformation that could compromise load stability during transport or storage.

For food and beverage manufacturers balancing efficiency, safety and traceability requirements, technologies such as intelligent sensors, vision systems and automated inspection tools are becoming standardised.
