Tighter labelling laws for juices wanted

Citrus growers want tighter labelling regulations on juice products to let consumers know the proportion of local and imported concentrate.

Juice company Nippy’s has said it may have to reduce the amount of local fruit used in its products as a result of the drought.

Loxton grower, Ron Gray, said that he is working with Citrus Growers SA to expose how much local growers are losing out to imported ingredients.

“The consumers are drinking absolute rubbish, so I think it’s time now we tightened the labelling laws and we’ll really find out how much fruit is out there,” he said.

“When there’s an oversupply in wine grapes, the price goes down. Now we’ve got an undersupply in citrus and we’re still getting paid nothing.”
