US study finds correlation found between soft drinks and violence

A US researcher studying the correlation between adolescents drinking soft drinks and rates of obesity says they were shocked to find a correlation between the amount of soft drink a student drank and the likelihood they of engaging in violent behavior.

Speaking on ABC News Radio, Professor David Hemenway from the Harvard School of Public Health said while it has not conclusively proven that soft drink is the cause of violence, it does indicate more research should be done.

“We have no idea why,” he told John Barron.

“We don’t know why the relationship is so strong, it could be something in the soda, it could well be that drinking a lot of soda means that you have a bad diet, it could just be that there’s a third factor, you know, students who don’t have good parenting.”

But he said the message from the study is that diet as a whole is a main concern.
